Dirt Dash

Event Name: Dirt Dash(Roborace)

Date: 7th September 2024

Time: 1:00 p.m.  to 3:00 p.m.

Event Description

Dirt Dash is an exciting event showcasing technological innovation. Teams from various colleges compete on challenging courses with their robots. These robots display speed, agility, and real-time decision-making as they navigate obstacles and race toward victory. This is achieved through precise engineering and smart programming.

Spectators are fascinated by the seamless blend of technology and competition, getting a firsthand look at the future of robotics. Dirt Dash not only pushes engineering boundaries but also inspires the next generation to explore the vast potential of robotics in transforming industries and everyday life.

Racing Track

Track width: The track will be approximately 40 cm.

Checkpoints: At certain checkpoints before the hurdles, the track width can increase to 60 cm.

Track Surface: The track may have uneven surfaces and various obstacles designed to slow down the robots.

Obstacles: Predefined obstacles on the race track include:

  • Switch Bridge
  • Speed Breakers
  • Marble Pit
  • Slippery Path
  • Curve Ramp Down
  • Seesaw etc.

The Bot

Bot must fit inside a box of 30cm length, 30cm width and 30cm height at any point in time. Maximum weight should not be more than 4Kgs including battery, however a tolerance of 5% is acceptable in weight. Participants need to ensure:

  • Batteries must be sealed, immobilized electrolyte type (gel cell, lithium, NiCad, or dry cells).
  • The electric voltage anywhere in the machine should not be more than 12V DC at any point in time for each robot.
  • The Bot must not emit infrared light. Teams may use RF module but must ensure that RF module should have function to change different frequencies/channels and not affect other bots.
  • If a team claims that their robot is affected by the other team’s robot in any way they must show proof/evidence of the interference. Any interference must be confirmed by a Referee if a claim is placed by the other team.
  • The robot should be manually controlled using a wireless Remote-control system.
  • The robot should not contain any kind of weapon/element that can damage other teams’ robot.
  • The tires of the car should be made of rubber. Cutting or modifying the tread is allowed.
  • The robot should operate on batteries. Drivers will not be allowed to charge the batteries during the race. The team should have extra batteries with them, we will not allow on-spot charging.
  • Also, it will be the duty of the driver to properly dispose of the unusable batteries.
  • Robots must be constructed and programmed in a way that their movement is not limited to only one direction and must move in all directions.
  • Any robotic parts/building material can be used until the robot meets the above specifications and if the design and construction are primarily the original work of the team as ready-made robots are not allowed to compete in the competition.

Gameplay

The competition involves racing robots that must start behind a designated starting line and finish by crossing a finishing line. Robots can be controlled manually. They must be able to navigate different terrains and obstacles without leaving the track.

The competition takes place in a defined area called the Racing Track. Three rounds will be held and  top three winning teams are selected. The racing track layout may change for each round.

Rules:

  1. The run timer will start when the front edge of the robot crosses the start line and stops when the front edge of the robot crosses the finish line.
  2. Each round would have maximum 6 minutes racing time and 2 minutes for readiness. Readiness time will not be included in racing time.
  3. If bot lose the track or stuck up or stop function, Bot operator can check the bot and restart from previous point. Any time used to adjust the robot between runs is included in the 6 minutes.
  4. Each run will start from the starting point. The operator may abort a run at any time. Each team will get maximum 3 chance to touch the bot in each round. If an operator touches the robot during a run, the team will start from the previous checkpoint. If a robot has already crossed the finish line, it may be removed at any time without affecting the runtime of that run.
  5. Skipping hurdles will add 10 seconds to your total time for each round.
  6. Touching the track boundaries will add 2 seconds to your total time.
  7. If there is a tie between the timings, both bots will be selected for next round.
  8. All bots are expected to cross all hurdles on the track.
  9. First Round: There will be 10-12 teams competing against each other. The top 8 teams will advance to the qualifying round.
  10. Qualifying Round: There will be 8 teams competing against each other. The top 4 teams will advance to the Final round.
  11. Final Round: Final round would happen among last 4 teams and 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners will be decided as per performance of team in final round.

Team Description:

  • A team can consist of a maximum of 4 members.
  • The 4 members should have the online registration to our unstop registration page.

Competition Structure:

Referee

  • Each race is managed by a referee who has full authority to enforce the rules.
  • Referees should use the designated walking area next to the field.
  • The referee’s decisions on game-related facts are final.
  • The referee may only change a decision if they realize it was incorrect or upon the advice of an assistant referee, as long as play hasn’t been restarted.
  • The referee is not liable for injuries to officials or spectators, property damage, or any other losses incurred by individuals, teams, organizations, or institutions.
  • Only bot handlers may communicate with the referee.

Duties:

  • The referee ensures a safe race for all participants and bots.
  • The referee ensures the race is conducted fairly according to the rules.
  • The referee ensures no interference from unauthorized persons or team members.
  • The referee ensures the race starts and resumes on time.

Assistant Referee

  • The assistant referee supports the main referee and should use the designated walking area opposite the referee.
  • Team members are not allowed to talk to the assistant referee.

Duties:

  • The assistant referee signals when misconduct or other incidents occur out of the referee's view.
  • The assistant referee promptly discusses any unclear situations with the main referee.

Bot Handler: Before the start of the race, every team has to designate bot handlers and a captain.

Duties: The captain asks the referee for Timeouts if necessary.

Race Preparation

  • All participants must be ready at least 10 minutes before the race starts to allow the referee to complete the following preparations:
  • Race Result Sheet: The referee obtains a race result sheet from the organizing committee. After the race, the referee fills in the final scores, collects the required signatures, and submits the sheet to the organizing committee.
  • Designating Bots: If a team has multiple bots, the referee will ask team captains to specify which bot they will use.

General Rules of the Tournament

Competitors are expected to act in a safe and legal manner at all times. The actions of any single team member can lead to the disqualification or expulsion of the entire team. Certain activities are strictly prohibited, and violations of these rules may result in disqualification of the competitor and/or team. The decision on such matters will be made by NMIMS and/or the producer at their sole discretion.

Final Authority

The organizer has the final authority over the interpretation and application of all rules. Decisions regarding the rules will be made by NMIMS at their sole discretion. All decisions by NMIMS regarding the rules, the tournament, and the program are final and cannot be challenged or appealed.

Notice: These Design Rules may change at any time, with or without notice. Updates will be reflected in a revised document with a higher revision number. It is your responsibility to read, understand, and comply with all rules provided by NMIMS. Check the rules frequently for updates that might affect your design or participation. NMIMS reserves the right to remove any team from the tournament at any time for any reason, including failure to meet safety or technical requirements.
